Lluidas Vale boys, after big penalty, reach quarter finals in parish clash
July 15, 2019The home crowd went into a frenzy at nightfall yesterday when Lluidas Vale Sporting Academy, in its first season back in competitive football, clenched a spot in the quarter finals of the St Catherine Under-17 Football Competition.
The team secured a 2-2 draw with Benbow United Football Club from the Guy’s Hill area of St Catherine.
A loss would have sent Lluidas Vale crashing out of the competition.
Chevaughn James stopped that misfortune when he scored the equalizer from the penalty spot for Lluidas Vale in the final minute of play. His team-mate, Zanu Davis, scored in the 21st minute after Benbow took an early lead.
Manager of the Lluidas Vale team, Jacques Small, while commending his squad, noted that half of the current team will be eligible to play again in the Under-17 competition next year.
“The team is really excited to know that it has accomplished such a task with very little experience and with such a young team,” he said.
Meanwhile, both scorers who engineered Lluidas Vale’s progress in the competition, told The Beacon that they intend to become professional footballers.
James said he was not nervous when he was about to boot the ball, knowing that his team’s fate was hinged to his single kick.
“I just have it in my mind to score the goal and carry my team to quarter final,” he declared, adding: “I feel great.”
James is a ninth grader at Kellits High School in Clarendon.
The other Lluidas Vale scorer, Davis, who is in Grade 10 at Ewarton High School in St Catherine, said he too is elated about the progress.
“I feel overwhelmed,” he declared when ask how he felt about scoring the first goal for Lluidas Vale in the match. Davis is hoping to slam many more balls into the net when quarter final action starts.
