LLUIDAS VALE: Bad road blamed for death in Juan de-Bolas

Residents of Juan de-Bolas district in the Lluidas Vale area of St Catherine are lamenting the deplorable condition of their roadway, which they think may have caused the death of a resident who was heading to work on foot about six o’clock yesterday morning, September 5.

The deceased is 48-year-old farmer Desmond Cunningham, also known as Boney, who was employed to Worthy Park Sugar Estate in Lluidas Vale.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force told The Beacon that a wound to Cunningham’s head, as well as the position in which he was found, suggests that he fell and hit his head.

A post mortem, however, is to be done to ascertain the exact cause of death.

An area resident who was early on the scene said it appeared Cunningham lost his footing while he was heading downhill, in the direction of his workplace.

“To how the road rough, it looks like when him hear a vehicle coming, him step out of the road and the gravel drop him. Him drop and him head turn down the hill,” the resident added.

Meanwhile, a driver who uses the stretch of roadway frequently, Seymour McFarlane, said, when he arrived at the scene, he saw another driver assisting Cunningham.

McFarlane, who is also called Berry, said the injured man told him: “Berry, help mi; mi a goh dead.”

McFarlane said he replied: “No man; yuh naah dead.”

McFarlane recounted that the other driver who initially was on the scene eventually left the area with Cunningham.

There are indications that Cunningham died soon after he left the scene of the incident – long before he arrived at Linstead Public Hospital in St Catherine.

McFarlane, in the meantime, appealed for the road to be repaired. “It is a very bad road and it seems like wi don’t even have anybody to call on,” he further told The Beacon.
