Linstead brothers, years apart, achieve academic excellence

Two brothers from the Cheesefield area of Linstead in St Catherine – Devonte and Devaughn Jackson, have been travelling steadfastly on similar paths of excellence in academics.

They are past students of Ewarton Primary School in St Catherine.

Devaughn, 12, just attained the highest ranking possible (Highly Proficient) in all four subjects administered in the Primary Exit Profile (PEP), which facilitates the placement of students in secondary schools. The subjects he demolished are Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.

“I am very proud of myself,” Devaughn told The Beacon, adding that he did a lot of studying, and has been a consistently high performer.

He will, in September, attend the prestigious Ardenne High School in Kingston 10.

Devaughn said he is pleased about his Ardenne placement, although Campion College was his first choice.

His 19-year-old brother, Devonte, actually left Campion College last month – ending his fifth form and sixth form sojourn there.

He, back in 2012, scored the second highest average on the island in the Grade Six Achievement Test. His average was 99 percent, and he copped the George Williams Gordon Scholarship.

Devonte continued his academic feat when he sat a total of 10 subjects in CSEC, which is administered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). He attained 8 Grade Ones – the highest grade possible, and 2 Grade Twos.

Devonte took his quest for academic success a notch higher last year when he achieved the highest possible grade (Grade One) in four CAPE subjects – also administered by CXC.

He told The Beacon that he is now awaiting the results for five subjects he sat last month – four CAPE and one CSEC.

Devonte, whose dream is to become a medical doctor, recently applied to the University of the West Indies, Mona, to study medicine.

Devaughn Jackson strikes a pose with his parents

The academic success achieved by the two brothers has brought pride and joy to their family, including their devoted parents – Corporal Devon Jackson who works at Linstead Police Station, and Malvia Jackson who is a trained teacher.

“I am really elated,” said the mother, who graduated last month from the Jamaica Theological Seminary as a social worker.

“We are very involved in our children’s lives,” she further told The Beacon, adding: “I am a parent who really likes to push my children.”

The parents, as well as other supporters of the young achievers, are undoubtedly expecting much more success as the Jackson brothers continue to walk firmly into the future.
