Kellits High wins again!
May 13, 2019For the second consecutive year, Kellits High School in Clarendon has used yam to create products that have captured the taste buds and hearts of judges, who on May 10 declared the school victor in the Kellits Yam Festival 2019 Product Development Competition.
The Social Development Commission (SDC), which hosts the contest as part of the annual Kellits Yam Festival, said the competition is to encourage area residents to participate in agro processing, which essentially is to transform agricultural raw material into food and beverages.
The judges allocated scores based on display, taste, and especially marketability.
The SDC, which said the competition was keenly contested, presented a gift basket to the school.
Horace Dalley, the Member of Parliament for Clarendon Northern was on hand to present the educational institution with the Horace Dalley Trophy for Best Product Development.
Principal of Kellits High, Texal Christie, beamed a broad smile as he – stride by stride with members of his team, went on a stage to collect the award.
“It feels real good because we put a lot of work into what we did last year, and this year we had to defend it,” Christie told The Beacon.
“The team this year did yam casserole, and wine that was one year old. They also did yam dukunu and yam bread pudding.”
Christie further stated that the competition, now in its second year, is particularly important to students pursuing Food and Home Economics.
A member of the winning team, Rayvon Mills, told The Beacon that the competition – and especially the victory, gives his school and its students much-needed exposure.
He also noted that much effort was placed into producing the winning products.
“We are very proud of this accomplishment,” added Mills, who also is Deputy Head Boy at Kellits High.
The second place finisher, in the meantime, is the Kellits Development Area Committee. Kenson Delight finished third in the contest held at Kellits Skills Training Centre.
