Graham accused of ‘hyping’ on poor with expensive vehicle, big treat

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate in St Catherine North West, Newton Amos, has accused his counterpart, Hugh Graham, of gloating on poor people with his ‘second hand’ lamborghini vehicle and a million-dollar treat he hosted on Mother’s Day for some 200 mothers predominantly from the constituency.

Amos stated that, while Graham of the People’s National Party (PNP) was ‘modelling’ in his vehicle and hosting the mega treat for relatively few, residents of the nearby Rosemount community were walking through raw sewage that had overflown into the streets.

He further claimed that, despite Rosemount residents protesting on May 10 and 13 against the sewage overflow, Graham did not show up to help address their concern, but was instead having fun at his treat on May 12.

Amos also stated that Graham, who is a parish councillor and the PNP candidate/caretaker for St Catherine North West, should understand that his first call of duty is to get down into the communities and help the people in need – not to ‘profile’ with a luxurious vehicle or big treat.

“You have a Mother’s Day treat in the town of Linstead while raw sewage is flowing in the same community where those persons that you are treating are from. It just doesn’t add up; that’s not what you are placed in leadership to do,” Amos continued.

“Graham, who aspires to relieve [the retiring Member of Parliament] Bobby Pickersgill, was in Linstead modeling in a second hand Lamborghini – profiling on his less fortunate Jamaicans whilst the people – including children, pregnant mothers and the aged – tried to navigate their way around a very serious and dangerous issue of raw sewage flowing freely in their community…. What the people need at this time is ‘substance over hype’,” Amos added.

Meanwhile, Graham, when contacted, told The Beacon that he was not aware of the protest done by residents of Rosemount district or the reason they were protesting.
