Chasing history | One Connection expects tough win

One Connection said its footballers are prepared to chase history when they square off with Crawle River on June 2 in the final of the Horace Dalley Insport Football League in Clarendon Northern.

Romaine Rowe, Manager of One Connection, told The Beacon that an overall victory would mean a lot, especially for the players who have been working very hard.

“It would mean our name would be cemented in history…” he said. “From 1993, no side from Rhoden Hall to St John has ever won the Horace Dalley League, and we plan to break this spell by winning the league for upper Clarendon people.”

One Connection, on Sunday, May 12, drew 0-0 with former champion Morgan’s Pass, thereby forcing the semi-final game into extra time and eventually into penalty shootout.

One Connection, in the end, scored a 4-2 win, courtesy of Alston ‘Twingy’ Cork, Junior ‘One Left’ Hamilton, O’Neil ‘2pac’ Howe, and Davort ‘Hoggy’ Well – all scoring from the penalty spot.

While commending Morgan’s Pass for being a top team in the league, Rowe noted that One Connection used 10 players to secure victory.

The team, in the early stage of the clash, lost Shawn Carty to a red card.

One Connection, which is appealing the red card decision, thinks a yellow would have sufficed.

The team’s manager – Rowe, in a letter to the management of the league, reasoned: “[Carty] was trying to avoid a collision or foul with a player from the opposing team after being beaten to the ball by the opposing player.

“During this time, the opposing player’s foot hit that of the One Connection player, and he threw himself in the 18-yard box. I believe this incident to be a simple human error and, as such, a yellow card should have been awarded as opposed to a red card,” added Rowe.

He stated that One Connection, in the meantime, is oozing confidence although it expects the final to be tough.

“Our team is well prepared. The players are energised, training hard and more so motivated by the thought of cementing their name in history by winning the league.

“We know it will be a tough match because [the other finalist] Crawle River is a very good team, but I strongly believe we are physically and mentally prepared for the final,” Rowe further told The Beacon.

Crawle River, the other finalist, is a former champion.
