BREAKING NEWS: Linstead schools reach semi-finals of daCosta Cup

October 29, 2019 0 By Horace Mills

Two schools from Linstead in St Catherine today advanced to the semi-finals of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup Football Competition, a double feat virtually unheard of on this part of the island.

The schools are McGrath High and Dinthill Technical High.

This is the first time that McGrath is passing the first round since it started to compete in 1994. It is also the only newcomer to the semi-final round.

Dinthill, on the other hand, is reaching the semi-finals for the third consecutive year. It actually won the overall competition in 1979 and 1981.

Dinthill clenched one of the four semi-final spots today, October 29, after Karim Bryan scored twice to engineer a 2-1 win against Frome Technical out of Westmoreland.

The latest development reflects a massive turn-around for Dinthill, which lost all but one match in the first round of the contest.

It limped into the second round after obtaining six crucial points off the field due to a breach by Charlemont High. Those six points lifted Dinthill from the bottom of Zone K. The rest is history.

McGrath, on the other hand, advanced today despite losing 2-1 to St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS). It won the two previous matches to remain at the top of Group 4 at the end of the quarter finals.

Meanwhile, defending champion Clarendon College reached the semis after completing an unbroken record of victories in the quarterfinals. It today thrashed Anchovy High 7-0.

The fourth semi-final spot has been taken by former champion Cornwall College.

EDITORIAL NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect additional information. However, that has not changed the fact that McGrath and Dinthill are among the four semi-finalists.
