Approval granted – Guy’s Hill Town Hall to become heritage building

The Jamaica Heritage Trust has agreed to declare the Town Hall in Guy’s Hill, St Catherine, a heritage building.
Chairman of the Guy’s Hill Community Development Committee, Irvin Small, made the disclosure on November 19 during an International Men’s Day Award Ceremony, which was held inside the Town Hall.
“The Committee has undertaken to invite the Jamaica Heritage Trust to declare this building and the Community Centre as heritage buildings, and I am very pleased and happy to report that they have undertaken to declare these buildings heritage buildings,” Small said.
He told the gathering that LASCO Top Cop, Corporal Samantha Brown-Thompson, wanted to undertake some work on the Town Hall, but the Jamaica Heritage Trust said it will do the work instead.
“The Heritage Trust sent to say please do not do anything more [on the Town Hall] because we will be doing all of that. So we are looking forward to see them come and take over, because buildings like these we cannot cast aside,” added Small.
“These are historic buildings where people met and continue to meet; it’s even used as a church from time to time. So I am happy that it is now a heritage building – you will see in a little while,” Small further told residents.
In the meantime, former Member of Parliament Sharon Haye-Webster, who has relatives living in Guy’s Hill, indicated that the Town Hall was among the two first buildings of the kind to be built in the county of Middlesex.
“This building is the first centre of its kind built in our county,” she told the gathering, adding that one of her relatives was involved in construction of the structure.
“There are only two community centres or town halls like this – this one here and the one in Porus… Those are the very first centres built in our county recognized as space for communities to gather,” Haye-Webster further said.
