Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ office has announced that Dr Andrew Wheatlley has ‘agreed’ to give up the energy portfolio amid damning allegations against him as well as other persons at the management level of the state-owned oil refinery, Petrojam.

Dr Wheatley, an ardent supporter of the prime minister, remains Minister of Science and Technology.

The energy component of the ministry has been shifted to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

The OPM, this evening (July 2), announced: “After discussion with Minister Wheatley, it was agreed that Petrojam requires strategic review of both its management and operations, as well as its long-term commercial viability and role in Jamaica’s energy security.

“Having regards to this and the ongoing investigation, Minister Wheatley agreed with the prime minister that, in the interest of transparency, the energy portfolio will be transferred to the Office of the Prime Minister, effective July 4, 2018,” added the OPM.
