LLUIDAS VALE: JLP rep gives schools 140 pounds of Irish potato

While noting that he is placing emphasis on farming in the Lluidas Vale Division of St Catherine, the recently selected Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate in the area, Joel Williams, this month donated 140 pounds of Irish potato to four schools in the Division.

He told The Beacon that, on April 11, he presented 20 pounds of the tuberous crop to Tydixon Basic School, 50 pounds to Tydixon Primary School, 20 pounds to the infant school in the Barnes Pen area of Lluidas Vale, and 50 pounds to Lluidas Vale Primary.

Williams said the schools were receptive, adding that the Irish potato should go towards their respective breakfast programmes. “It feels very great giving back; I am now bursting at the seams with pride and joy because of the reception. The teachers, principals, students and residents were very receptive towards it.”

Williams, in the meantime, said it was the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) that provided the Irish potatoes, which were planted on private property in Tydixon, as part of an agricultural pilot project.

“It was a very successful pilot project because we planted three-quarter acres, and we yielded over 4,000 pounds of Irish,” he disclosed, adding: “We started out with Irish potato and we are planning to go into pumpkins, sweet potato and other produce as time progresses.”

Williams, who noted that he already helped to register some 35 Tydixon farmers with RADA, said he intends to do likewise in other communities where farming is the main source of income for area residents.
