I want justice for my son, Clarendon mom declares amid airport tragedy
December 6, 2019The mother and the common-law wife of a Clarendon native who reportedly was electrocuted on the job at Sangster International Airport in St James this week have appealed for answers about the circumstances under which their loved one lost his life.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force said 28-year-old labourer Triston Rose, also called Palmer, ‘was conducting repairs in a section of the airport when he got caught in a live electrical wire and was electrocuted’.
A post mortem is yet to be done.
Rose, who originally is from Reckford district in the Kellits area of Clarendon, was employed to Wepro Construction Limited – a company contracted to undertake refurbishment at the airport.
He worked at various locations with the entity for a number of years, and was on the night shift when tragedy struck shortly after 1 o’clock on Wednesday morning, December 4.
The two main women in Rose’s life – his mother and his girlfriend – said they spoke with representatives of the company, but are yet to get a proper explanation of what transpired.
“The company is not giving me any clarity and right now I am wondering if it is really electrocuted Triston was electrocuted,” said the common-law wife, Sian Scott. “I am puzzled; I don’t know what to say,” she added while declaring that Rose was not an electrician by practice or training.
Noting a police report that Rose was working in an area where there was ‘live wire’, the common-law wife said: “Why did they put Triston where a live wire is to work? That is the question I am asking; I am not getting clarity.”
Meanwhile, Marie Bonnick, mother of the deceased, said she is not taking her son’s death lightly.
“I want justice for my son; I need somebody to tell me what happened; and I am not going to take this lightly,” she told The Beacon.
“Accidents do happen, but I need for somebody to talk to me – to tell me what happened to my son… I am not getting any answer; I don’t know what happened more than I heard that my son got electrocuted. How did it happen? Why was he in that part of the building [where it happened]? Was he wearing a protective gear? Was he employed as an electrician? He was employed as a labourer,” the mother further said.
The company, when contacted by The Beacon, said its investigation is ongoing, and so it is not yet in a position to comment further on the deadly incident. It said it already expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
