Gov’t mulls building new prison in Trelawny

Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang said a priority for the government is to build a new prison in the parish of Trelawny.

“We are looking at a new prison out in Trelawny where, in addition to regular prison space, we want what we call hardened cells,” he disclosed last evening (June 21) during a Crime and Security Forum in St Catherine.

The minister explained that ‘hardened cells,’ which will be built in the new correctional facility, will prevent prisoners from making electronic communication with the outside world.

“We have to build a prison where we can have what they call hardened cells – the cells where they can’t get electronic communication out. So that is a priority for us… We are looking at how we can get that going,” Dr Chang further said.
