The Shady Grove Police in Lluidas Vale have arrested and charged a 17-year-old male for several offences following the death of a man and the wounding of another during a robbery in Top Hill, St Catherine, on January 13.

The accused teen, who is from the Cotton Piece area of Linstead, was charged on March 30 for the murder of 35-year-old Omar Newton from Pennington district in St Catherine.

He is also facing additional charges of wounding with intent, robbery with aggravation, and illegal possession of firearm.

Police reports are that Newton and the other victim were patrons at a night club in Top Hill where a robbery ensued.

Newton is shown here while he was being treated at University Hospital of the West Indies, where he died roughly a month after he was shot.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said: “The patrons were instructed to lay flat on the ground. However, Newton, who was unable to hear or speak, did not comply. He and the other man were shot and several items – including cell phones and liquors – were taken from the premises.”

“The police were summoned and both men were taken to hospital where Newton succumbed to his injuries,” added the JCF. The other man was treated and released from hospital.

Newton was laid to rest on 11 March 2018 in Pennington district where he was raised by his grandmother Alethia Gillespie.
