It’s not often that one hears about an ackee-related contest, but what is important to Felicia Francis is that she cooked it well, copping the grand prize and the big title – Miss Linstead Ackee and Jerk Festival Queen 2018.
“I feel really great to win this competition,” she told The Beacon. “I represented my school and community very well.”
Francis, Head Girl at McGrath High School and resident of Lluidas Vale in St Catherine, thinks her talent and personality gave her the edge over two other contestants – Sahgia Francis (second) and Cadeen Richards (third).
“I also won the Best Talent [category] because I actually wrote my own poem,” Francis said.
The competition, held at Dinthill Technical High School on Heroes Day, entailed a sportswear section, cultural wear section, talent section that embraces ackee, and the evening gown section that also include questions and answers.
Francis thinks the benefit of such contest exceeds a trophy and the $15000 grand prize. “I intend to use this platform to build me as an individual, in terms of my personality, my confidence and status at school and in my community. Persons now look up to me as an ambassador,” she declared.
Francis, 17, is an aspiring journalist and actress.
