Sentencing postponed for man convicted of murdering 4 in Linstead

Sentencing has been postponed for the man found guilty of murdering four people at Mickelton in Linstead, St Catherine, on the night of August 20, 2014.

He is 34-year-old Simeon Miller, a resident of Linstead.

Miller was scheduled to be sentenced in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston last Friday, July 6. However, the matter was put off until July 20.

Recodel Jackson, who was murdered in the shop, was successful in 17 CXC subjects, comprising 11 CSEC and six CAPE.

The victims of the gun murder are 27-year-old Recodel Jackson, Garfield Simpson who was in his 30s, 43-year-old Dean Pratt, and 20-year-old Shanna-Kay Simpson.

Relatives of some of the people killed told Jamaica Beacon after the guilty verdict that they want the convict to get the death penalty.

The mother of the convict’s children responded, claiming that her common-law husband is innocent and doesn’t deserve death.

A seven-member jury, on May 25, announced the unanimous guilty verdict after it deliberated for some 40 minutes in the Kingston court.

The court heard that, on the night of the shootings, three gunmen dressed in police uniform and army fatigue shot and killed the two Simpsons while they were standing along the roadway in the community of Mickelton.

The gunmen then went to a shop in the area and tried to carry out a robbery. Jackson was murdered inside the establishment.

The gunmen later shot and killed Pratt, who happened upon the scene of the robbery while driving his motorcar home.

Shanna-Kay Simpson was registering at Portmore HEART Academy at the time she was murdered.

A person who was in the shop at the time of the robbery later identified Miller as one of the gunmen, adding that Miller – unlike the other criminals – was not wearing a mask when the crimes were being perpetrated.
Miller was charged the following month.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for one of the bereaved families said she has been informed that the second suspect was shot dead in Linstead some time after the murders, while the third is on the run overseas.
