The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said its officers across the island, along with members of the Jamaica Defence Force, seized 24 guns and 319 rounds of assorted ammunition so far this week, up to Friday, September 28.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Selvin Hay said firearm seizures have occurred at a rate of two per day since January, while about 34 rounds of ammunition are seized daily.

“This represents numerous lives that have been saved by the work of the police, who lessen the ability of criminals to carry out their nefarious acts,” the deputy commissioner said. “This is just one of the ways the police act as a force for good in the lives of Jamaicans every day.”

The JCF said, in the latest seizure – which happened yesterday on Sunset Boulevard in Montego Bay, St James – two firearms and 26 cartridges were seized and five men nabbed.

It continued: “Reports are that, between the hours of 5:30am and 8:30am, a joint police/military team was conducting operations, which led them to the location.

“A room, which had five males present, was searched. One 9 millimetre pistol with a magazine containing eighteen 9 millimetre cartridges and one Colt .45 pistol with a magazine containing eight .45 cartridges was found inside the room. The men were subsequently arrested,” added the JCF.

The other guns, this week, were seized in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, Hanover and Westmoreland.

DCP Hay, in the meantime, urged citizens to assist the police by providing information relating to illegal activities.

“Persons may call the Police 119 emergency number, Crime Stop at 311, the nearest police station, or they may use the Stay Alert application,” the JCF advised.
