Man charged for brutal crimes against women in Spanish Town

A 63-year-old construction worker from McCooks Pen in Spanish Town, St Catherine, has been charged with the murder of a woman and attempted murder of another female at different locations in the parish on the same day – Friday, September 14.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Ernest Whyte is charged with Murder, Attempted Murder, Assault at Common Law, and Arson.

The deceased is 47-year-old Denise Bright from McCooks Pen, St Catherine.

Elaborating on the crimes, the JCF said: “Reports from the Spanish Town police are that, about 10am, Whyte and Bright were involved in an argument when he used a machete to inflict multiple wounds to Bright and fled the scene.

“Later that day, about 2:25pm, Whyte went to Mansfield Avenue and got into another dispute with another female when he used a knife to inflict stab wounds to her before setting the house ablaze. The fire was extinguished and she was assisted to hospital for treatment,” the JCF further said.

Police arrested Whyte on September 14 and charged him on October 10.

He is to appear in the St Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday, October 16.
