Law enforcer slain in domestic dispute | commish condemns incident

For the second straight Sunday morning, Jamaicans are being hit with news about the slaying of at least one woman as a result of domestic violence.

The latest victim, Woman District Constable Mellissa Edwards-Whyte, who is pictured above, was fatally chopped at her home in St Andrew about 9 o’clock last evening, September 29.

Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Major General Antony Anderson, condemned the attack on the cop who was assigned to Crime Stop.

“It is unfortunate that domestic violence has robbed us of another promising talent. Woman District Constable Mellissa Edwards-Whyte was met with such cruelty and callousness and no effort will be spared in bringing closure to this matter,” he said.

The JCF, in the meantime, stated that its Chaplaincy and Community Safety and Security Branch have been instructed to provide ‘all the necessary support’ to colleagues and friends of the slain cop.

It also reminded police officers to use the Chaplaincy and Medical Services Branch to help through domestic and other issues.

“Police officers are encouraged to remain vigilant and undaunted as we continue to enforce law and order and build safer communities,” added the JCF.

“As a nation, we must bond together to preserve the rule of law, the safety, security and human rights of every Jamaican.”

Meanwhile, last weekend, Fabian Lyewsang allegedly butchered his 45-year-old common-law-wife Deon Smith and her 16-year-old daughter Jayshenel Gordon. This incident happened in Rose Mount, St James.

Lyewsang was found dead several miles away in the Rio Cobre waters of St Catherine. The Nissan Tiida motorcar he purportedly drove to the location was also found at Rio Cobre.

Police theorize that Lyewsang committed suicide after he perpetrated the double murder.
