Tatania Garces and her sister Melody Williams recently paid a special visit to their alma mater – Camperdown Primary and Infant School, located on the border of St Ann and St Catherine.

They brought a team of 19 persons from the United States to help share the contents of three barrels with students.

Approximately 120 students from the aforementioned school, along with others from the neighbouring Clover Hill Basic School, received items such as clothing, shoes, stationery, sheet sets, and blankets. Garces also treated the students to KFC on the same day – July 8.

She said it was always on her bucket list to give back to her alma mater, adding that she is happy that the school gave her the opportunity to create such memorable moment.

Garces, whose husband and children were among the group of visitors, noted the importance of having her children participate in the experience. She wanted to teach them to give back to society, and to introduce them to the institution that helped to mold her.

Garces promised to make it an annual event, stating that she already started shopping for next year. She also committed to sponsoring one needy child to complete primary school.

A member of the visiting team, who is a teacher in the United States and is originally from Puerto Rico, said it’s her first visit to Jamaica, and sharing with the students was the best part of her visit.

The visitors, in the meantime, were entertained by teacher Duval Ebanks, who did a fantastic job chairing the programme. Three students from Grade One added to the merriment, teaching the visitors how to do the popular ‘Fling’ dance.

Principal at Camperdown Primary and Infant School, Yvette Davis-Richards, thanked the team and presented Garces with a plaque to express gratitude for her benevolence.

The school also used the opportunity to appeal for other past students, both at home and abroad, to follow Garces’ example and give back to their alma mater and its students.
