On the heels of securing a 99 percent average in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), 12-year-old Devon Hickey has realized another reason to celebrate.

He has attained a Grade One (the best grade possible) in Biology, according to preliminary CSEC results released by the Caribbean Examination Council.

In terms of Grade Profiles for Biology, Hickey, who hails from George’s Plain in Westmoreland, attained the following:

Knowledge and Comprehension – A
Use of Knowledge – B
Experimental Skills – A

Hickey, who attended Unity Primary, started another phase of his academic journey in September at Mannings High.

He wants to become a neurosurgeon.

The youngster told The Beacon that he was inspired by his father Devon Hickey Snr, who recently underwent six life-saving surgeries.

The elder Hickey was involved in a near-fatal motor vehicle crash in Westmoreland last December, and had to be flown overseas for treatment.

He is back in Jamaica, but is still paralyzed from the chest down.

“My father’s accident has driven me. My father is a fighter and he has motivated me,” young Hickey told The Beacon.

He added: “When I realized that Jamaica has limited resources and dad had to go overseas to get treatment, I felt compelled to make a change.”

While the youngster was preparing for both GSAT and CSEC, his mother Sherefa Hickey was abroad with his father.

She was hesitant when young Hickey sought permission to sit Biology in CSEC.

But she eventually yielded to persistence.

Hickey then enrolled at McKenzie Evening Institute.

His mother now beams with pride and joy.

“I am really excited about the future,” the mother told The Beacon.
